THE BEARS · A short field note

A place of refuge, a lesson in care.

The bears may bring you to Kuterevo. The idea behind the refuge stays with you.

There is a particular kind of attention that a bear asks of you. Stop talking for a moment. Watch how it moves, pauses and investigates its surroundings. In Kuterevo, that attention is a good place to begin.

The refuge project began in 2002, with a mission to offer a home to orphaned bears, protect their habitat and encourage a more sustainable relationship with the mountain environment. Velebitska udruga Kuterevo connects that work with the traditions and life of the village.

Volunteers are part of the story, as are local people. A visit is an opportunity to learn about the animals and the long commitment involved in their care. It is not a promise of a performance; the bears may be active, resting or out of sight.

Before arriving, read the refuge's current visiting guidance. At the site, follow the team's instructions and watch from the designated areas. If you want to volunteer or support its work, speak directly with the refuge through its official website.

Come with time to observe. Leave with a better question about how we share the world.
